Over the years, the landscape has inspired poets and musicians. For instance, Johnny Cash’s romantic song, “40 Shades of Green” is about Ireland — and a girl from Ireland!
Often referred to as “The Emerald Isle,” Ireland’s beautiful green lush countryside is the reason for this charming nickname has gained popularity. However, the real story behind the origin of the nickname was William Drennan, an Irish poet, who used first the term, “The Emerald Isle” in his poem, “When Erin First Rose.”

The most notable of these ruins predate both the Egyptian pyramids and Stonehenge and with an ancient mix of Viking, Celtic.
Archeologists report that some ruins date back to Neolithic times and we’ll see some in Newgrange and other places.
The history that has taken place over these many centuries includes much that would satisfy any history buff.

The medieval castles were built as defensive homes by the island’s most powerful families. Unfortunately, most of the castles were abandoned and left to lie as ruins. However, many of have been restored and can now be explored.
We’ll enjoy the Blarney Castle where you may want to kiss the famous Blarney store, visit Ashford castle and others along our way.

This is Cork, known as “The Rebel County” and got its nickname due to a history of independence from fighting the Viking invasions to the Irish War of Independence. Galway, a harbour city on Ireland’s west coast, known for having the most fun in Ireland with an 18th-century square with shops, art galleries, and pubs with live Irish folk music inside the medieval city walls. Killarney one of the most picturesque towns is famous for its jaunting cars (horse-drawn carts) operated by local “jarvies.” Kilkenny, famous for medieval buildings and castle, is referred to as the “Marble City” and people from Kilkenny are often called “Cats.” Sligo, in the north of Ireland, is a busy fishing port and bustling market town known for its literary heritage and rugged countryside. These are just a few we visit on our exploration of Ireland!
